Nursing Administration for PNS Drugs
The Main Learning Objectives
To describe the mechanism of action of the neuromuscular blockers (NMBs)
To recognize the rationale of using general anesthetics and/or analgesics with NMBs
To specify how NMBs cause skeletal muscle paralysis
To describe the components of the neuromuscular junction
To list 3 common indications when paralysis with NMBs is used
To specify the function of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors
To define skeletal muscles, discuss the appearance of skeletal muscles, and categorize the diaphragm in terms of muscle type
To recognize whether NMBs can cross the blood-brain barrier and placenta
To identify the pharmacologic effects of NMBs in the skeletal muscles and the central nervous system (CNS) & to list 2 life-threatening adverse effects of NMBs
To describe the following competitive neuromuscular blockers (NMBs) in terms of their approved uses, whether they cause hypotension, route of elimination, duration of action, and additional features: atracurium, cisatracurium, pancuronium, rocuronium, and vecuronium
To define the mechanism of action of competitive NMBs
To specify the rationale behind using sedatives with NMBs & to list 3 common indications when paralysis with NMBs is used
To describe the mechanism of action, the indication, and adverse effects of succinylcholine
To describe malignant hyperthermia features & to describe the treatment plan
