The Main Learning Objectives
To brief about neonatology ( newborn medicine)
To recognize the key differences between a newborn physical exam and an adult physical exam
To recall the normal ranges of newborn vital signs
To state the important structures to check in the head, eyes, ears, nose, and throat (HEENT) portion of a newborn physical exam
To describe what areas should be examined during the chest examination, the neurologic exam, the abdominal, and genital examination of a newborn
To identify the structures that should be checked and inspected while examining the extremities of a newborn To discuss the breastfeeding and anticipatory guidance for new parents
To explain the necessary and appropriate procedures for umbilical cord care in newborns
To state and discuss proper skin and diaper care for newborns
To discuss prematurity and respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), apnea of prematurity and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC)
To describe the risk factors & the symptoms for intraventricular hemorrhage
To describe the pathophysiologic effects of diabetes during pregnancy on the neonate
To discuss the pathophysiology the clinical presentations of laryngomalacia, tracheomalacia, tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF), omphalocele, and gastroschisis
To explain the etiology, pathophysiology, and clinical presentations of toxoplasmosis, syphilis, HIV, congenital rubella and cytomegalovirus Infection (CMV), and herpes simplex viral infection
To discuss neonatal hyperbilirubinemia ( neonatal jaundice)
